Aged Garlic
Stops The Growth of Prostate Cancer Cells
Used for more than 4,000 years as an herbal medicine, garlic may prove to be the wonder drug of the next millennium. Garlic is a “broad-spectrum” herb that offers numerous benefits. It is a natural antibiotic – in
fact, during World War II when penicillin was scarce, the Russian army relied on garlic to prevent infection on the battlefield. Garlic can protect against heart disease by thwarting the formation of blood clots.
But there’s even more exciting news about the herb known as the “stinking rose.” According to researchers at New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center, aged garlic can dramatically reduce the growth of human prostate cancer cells in test tube experiments. Researchers exposed prostate cancer cells to S-allylmercaptocysteine, a sulfur compound found only in aged, (not fresh) garlic. Prostate cancer cells are sensitive to the male hormone testosterone and particularly to DHT, a potent metabolite of testosterone that can stimulate the growth of prostate tumors. When exposed to aged garlic, the cancer cells broke down testosterone two to four times faster than normal, and even better, did so through a pathway that does not produce the troublesome DHT.
In addition, the aged garlic reduced the body’s production of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) which can cause prostate cells to grow. Higher than normal levels of PSA (over 4) may be a marker for prostate cancer or other problems. Prostate cancer is very common among older men, and there are few effective treatments. In fact, the treatment of choice is often no treatment, or a period of “watchful waiting” during which the patient is closely monitored by his physician. If the cancer stays contained, the patient may never need treatment. However, during this period of watchful waiting, I think it makes enormous sense to make positive changes in your lifestyle. Eliminating fatty foods, eating fresh vegetables, and adding soy foods to your diet are wonderful ways to improve your health and perhaps even prevent prostate cancer from progressing beyond its earliest stages. Adding garlic capsules to your diet also makes good sense. In fact, I urge all men to make these positive changes before they are confronted with prostate cancer. Researchers caution that fresh garlic won’t do; the bulbs must be aged for at least a year. Aged garlic pills and capsules sold over the counter are a good source of this all-important cancer-fighting sulfur compound.
