The
Good News More and More Positive Findings About DHEA
The New York Academy of Sciences published a book entitled
"DHEA and Aging," that only confirms and further validates Abunda Life
Laboratories research on the benefits of DHEA replacement therapy. Do
not expect to get this information from your doctor or the establishment
press. They are not in the business of giving you good news or telling
you about self-help forms of' natural food supplements that have the
potential of enhancing your health. It is for that reason that I canceled
my subscriptions to the newspaper and pulled the plug on my T.V. long
ago. To be healthy you have got to get out of the establishment's system
of medicine. You must begin to take responsibility for your health and
well being.
Proven Clinical Studies on DHEA Abunda Life is seldom the
first to come out with a new product. We have over 500 unique powerful
and effective natural health products already that we developed over
the last 30 years. With a hundred of new products coming on the market
every month it is impossible to know which ones work and which ones
are sleazy hype.
We have made it our policy to let time and results
test out the new products. We have learned that most new product fall
by the wayside. The products that work will remain on the market and
research will catch up to the reason they work. This is one of the differences
between orthodox drug medicine and naturopathic medicine. Drug medicine,
because of its life threatening dangers and horrible side effects, must
wait for all the clinical studies to be complete before prescribing
a new drug. Natural supplements, herbs, vitamins, and food medicine
do not have those inherent dangers.
For that reason if a new health
product appears to have efficacy, a Naturopathic Doctor may recommend
it long before he/she knows exactly why it works. Within time, the research
catches up and gives us a validation. DHEA is one of those very special
products. Clinical studies now provide evidence that DHEA improves memory,
mood, EEG readings, and may play a protective role against neurodegenerative
disease. DHEA was shown to prevent pharmacologically induced amnesia
and mental impairment by antagonizing the neurotransmitter called gamma-amino-butyric
acid (Gaba) and valium like benzodiazepine like drugs. By desensitizing
Gaba A receptors DHEA may counteract the effects of aging ill neurons,
thus improving memory and promoting neuronal survival. The data suggests
that declining DHEA in the brain may accelerate brain aging and increase
the likelihood of an early premature death. Epidemiologic studies show
that low DHEA levels predispose people to Alzheimer Disease, and new
studies provide some molecular mechanisms to explain why DHEA supplementation
may help to prevent Alzheimer Disease.
One of the most remarkable clinical
findings comes from a human study by S.S.C. Yen and Associates at the
University of California, San Diego, in which just 50 mg a day of DHEA
over a 6 month period restored serum levels of DHEA in both men and
women to youthful levels. DHEA was also shown to significantly elevate
insulin growth factor and increase lean body mass and muscular strength.
Aging causes a decline in IGF levels that contributes to the loss of
lean body mass, as well as to add to the accumulation of excess body
fat weight, neurological impairment and age related immune system dysfunction.
Discovered at Last... The Mother Hormone DHEA-dehydropiandrosterone
- (pronounced - dee-hi-dro-epp-ee-ann-dro-stehr·own) has been called
by many experts "The Mother Hormone" because of its numerous positive
effect on the body. At the recent DHEA conference, a multitude of papers
were presented extolling the benefits of oral DHEA supplementation.
DHEA May Have A Significant Impact On Lean Body Mass In one study conducted
by D. Jakubowicz and colleagues, 22 men took 300 mg of DHEA nightly
for 30 days. They observed an average 27% fall in insulin levels. They
also found an 89% increase in IGF-1 (a powerful hormone with multifaceted
effects, most notable its growth hormone-life effects on body composition).
A l4% decrease in body fat, and a 7.8% increase in lean body mass.
DHEA
May Promote Healthier-Leaner Eating Habits
Another study showed DHEA
had an interesting effect on the choice of foods consumed. A controlled
animal study showed those administered with DHEA, when given a choice,
chose nearly pure protein and carbohydrate foods as opposed to foods
comprised of high fat. Youthful DHEA Levels Restored In Just 2 Weeks!
As we age our body's natural production of DHEA declines dramatically.
This decline leaves many researchers to believe DHEA may play an important
role in the aging process and diseases that are related to aging. A
recent study published in the journal "Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism"
showed, a tightly controlled group of men and women taking 50 mg of
DHEA nightly restored serum (circulating blood) DHEA levels to those
found in young adults within just 2 weeks. These levels were sustained
throughout the study.
Amazingly the Hormone DHEA Mimics "Fountain Of
Youth" This was the title of an article in a recent issue of "Science
News". In this article, scientist Samuel S.C. Yen discusses the results
of a DHEA study performed at the University of California in San Diego.
In this study, Yen observed that by restoring DHEA levels through oral
supplementation, volunteers improved their ability to cope with stress,
had greater mobility, improved quality of sleep, and had less joint
pain. In an addition, the study participants receiving DHEA saw a 75%
increase in their overall well-being, compared to those not receiving
DHEA.
Abunda Life Laboratories DHEA is pure pharmaceutical DHEA, not
Mexican Wild Yam. Because Mexican Wild Yam contains precursors to DHEA,
many unscrupulous companies are trying to masquerade this herb for the
real thing. Mexican Wild Yam does not contain any DHEA. Mexican Wild
Yam has not been shown in any studies to have the positive effects that
real DHEA has. Abunda Life uses only pure pharmaceutical DHEA.
Finally-The
New Anti Aging Brain Enhancing Supplement
The increased life span that
we are enjoying as humans has brought us a real dilemma: can your physical
bodies and mental processes keep up with our increasing length of life?
Is it worth living longer if we face a diminished capacity to learn,
to remember, and to think? Learning ability and memory may diminish
because of a variety of factors, including neurotransmitter disturbances,
metabolic fallout, nerve cell dropout, and other losses in higher mental
functions. There is a great deal of research in the area of maintaining
mental acuity, and some of the more promising data involves a brain
nutrient called DHEA. As we age, we can lose as much as half of our
ability to perform everyday tasks related to memory and cognition.
What
is DHEA?
Dehydroepiandrosterone is a naturally-occurring phospholipid
nutrient, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. DHEA is
produced in larger amounts than any other adrenal steroid hormone. It
is called the mother of hormones by researchers because it is a precursor
for the manufacture of many other hormones, including 50 from the adrenal
glands. These are responsible for the maintenance of many body functions
such as fat and mineral metabolism, controlling stress, maintaining
male and female characteristics and others. Wild yam root is a tuberous
root with a long history of medicinal and food use. Diosgenin is a steroidal
glycoside taken from wild yam and is partially converted in the intestines
to the hormone DHEA, among others.
What Does DHEA Do?
The body produces
DHEA and then converts it on demand to other hormones. Research has
found DHEA to have: significant antiobesity, anti-aging, anti-stress,
anti-PMS, anti-menopause and anti-cancer effects, plus other wonderful
effects. Arthur Schwartz, a biochemist at Temple University, administered
DHEA to mice and observed an incredible reversal of aging. Old mice
regained youthful vigor and their coats resumed their former sleek and
glossy texture. Cancer, whether naturally occurring or induced by artificial
means, disappeared. Obese mice returned to normal weight, and immune
response increased. Those with diabetes improved dramatically, and life
span was increase by 20%. Forty thousand medical studies and articles
regarding DHEA have shown that low DHEA levels in humans correlate to
increased risk of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes
and premature aging.
In America, 83% of all deaths are from cancer and
heart disease. When DHEA levels are raised, aging is retarded and age-related
problems seem to disappear.
Renewed Youth Rejuvenation and Regeneration
Supplement.
An age 50+ user of DHEA in a double-blind study says, "I
know how people grow old in this country. They sit there in retirement
homes. It's a terrible waste. I don't have to live to be a hundred but,
my goodness, I want to be alive! I want the energy to take care of myself,
to work if I want, and to pursue new projects." Participants took the
hormone half the year and a placebo half the year, never knowing which
was which, but her body knew. She was eager to get out of bed in the
morning. She slept less but slept better. She felt more sensuous and
feminine. And she got more done. She definitely could tell the difference.
And so did the others in the study. The study's leader noted that a
high percentage of the people decreased fat levels and increased muscle
mass, most felt noticeably better; most handled stress significantly
more successfully, their quality of sleep improved, and their sense
of overall well-being was high. Those Magic Hormones In animals the
hormone seems to act like a magic nectar. Mice prone to obesity stay
slim and lean and live longer when given daily doses of DHEA. Rodents
bred to have a high risk of breast cancer have a much lower incidence
of that disease when receiving DHEA. Old mice on DHEA even look young,
their coats are thick and shiny and they have more energy, making them
hard to distinguish from animals half their age.
Now You Can Build An
Indestructible Immune System!
DHEA protects against bacterial and viral
infections. DHEA has prevented death from infection from two different
types of viruses and a fatal streptococcus infection. It is believed
that DHEA stimulates T-cells, H-cells and macrophage by interfering
with glucocorticoid immunosuppression. In The Journal of Infectious
Disease (Nov. 1991) Dr. William Regelson demonstrated that people with
HIV virus do not suffer from full-blown AIDS until their adrenal output
of DHEA drops. Men with low levels of DHEA had double the risk of full-blown
AIDS compared to men with normal DHEA levels. John Nestler, an endocrinologist
at the Medical College of Virginia, says, "DHEA is one of the most abundant
hormones in humans. As it stands to reason that it has some biological
effects on us. If I had to guess which of those effects were the strongest,
I would say protection against heart disease and boosting immunity."
Don't Wait Till It's Too Late Prevent Heart Attacks Now!
Research by
Dr. Elizabeth Barrett-Conner of U.C., San Diego published in The New
England Journal of Medicine provides interesting evidence. The study
published in 1986 (315, 1519-24) reported on 242 men aged 50-79 who
were tracked for 12 years. Men whose initial levels were higher than
140 mg. were less than half as likely to have died of heart disease
by the end of the study, even when researchers took into consideration
such factors as smoking and cholesterol levels. "A 100 microgram per
deciliter increase in DHEA concentration corresponded with a 48% reduction
in mortality due to cardiovascular disease and a 36% reduction in mortality
for any reason. The natural level of DHEA was measured and those individuals
with higher DHEA levels lived longer and had much lower risk of heart
disease."
Protects against Breast Cancer
Dr. Arthur Schwartz of the
Fels Institute of Temple University, gave DHEA to mice bred to develop
breast cancer. The mice remained cancer FREE! They also showed that
DHEA prevented lung tumors and bowel cancer in the mouse population.
In a study of 5,000 women on the Isle of Guernsey, (Great Britain),
women who had developed breast cancer had subnormal DHEA levels as long
as 9 years prior to the development of the disease. The highest risk
of cancer was linked with the lowest levels of DHEA. In one 22-year
study of 5,000 apparently healthy women, it was discovered that 100%,
of the women who developed and died of breast cancer had blood levels
of DHEA of less than 10% of that expected for their age group. All of
the women with higher than average levels of DHEA remained free of any
kind of cancer!
New Memory Breakthrough
The French endocrinologist Etiennc-EmileBaulieu
is wagering that doses of DHEA will sharpen the mind even as they protect
the body. The hormone helps brain cells grow in the lab, seems to improve
rodents' short-term memory, and has even shown some effect in humans.
We've already seen some correlation between DHEA levels and mental acuity
in older people," says Baulieu. DHEA blood levels peak in our mid-twenties
and then begin to decline. By the time we are 70, DHEA levels are only
10-20% of that of our 20's. Researchers suspect the decline may be part
of the reason we succumb to diseases like heart disease and cancer as
we get older. Blood levels of DHEA, which average between 300-500 meg.
per deciliter in 20-year-olds, may be the most reliable single measure
of how quickly our bodies are aging.
The fact that some people lose
less DHEA than others may explain why some people seem to age better
than others. Studies show that an increase in blood levels of DHEA is
associated with a 36% reduction in mortality from any cause. A 1988
John Hopkins study showed 50% reduction in arterial plaque in rabbits.
A Temple University study showed supplemental DHEA was able to prevent
breast cancer in mice that were prone to develop it. The studies also
showed the prevention of lung and bowel tumors plus the extension of
life span. Doctors at the Medical College of Viriginia showed lower
DHEA levels were associated with the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque
and that higher insulin levels from the ingestion of simple carbohydrate
caused a reduction of DHEA levels in the body. Maintaining DHEA levels
in the body has been shown to be important in improving memory, preventing
Alzheimer's disease and preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Studies in 1990 by Dr. Eugene Roberts, at the Reckman Research Institute
in Duarte, California, showed that DHEA has tremendous potential to
enhance memory in both young and old mice. In another study, Dr. C.K.
Merrill, from the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics in Bethesda, Maryland,
found Alzheimer's patients have 48% lower DHEA than a control group.
NOW HELP FOR DIABETICS
Working at the Jackson laboratory in Bar Harbor,
Maine, researchers Douglas Coleman and Edward H. Leiter, have found
that by giving DHEA in large doses to mice bred either to develop diabetes
or obesity, the development of either condition was completely blocked.
This occurred without any change in food consumption! Natural Anti-Fatigue
Supplement Dr. Eugene Roberts, at the Dept. of Neurobiochemistry for
Beekman Research Institute, has raised levels of energy, endurance,
limb power, strength and agility in patients suffering from multiple
sclerosis, a disease affecting the central nervous system. In yet another
double-blind experiment by Vincent P. Calarese of the Medical College
of Virginia showed a positive relationship between the use of DHEA and
the relief of fatigue. In this study 64% of the multiple sclerosis patients
receiving DHEA reported a significant reduction in fatigue and improved
stamina. No More Mindless Drugs No More PMS and Menopause Suffering
Doctors prescribe a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone
for women with menstrual problems, osteoporosis and menopausal symptoms.
The risks of this therapy, however, are significant. In addition to
unpleasant side effects such as fluid retention and salt buildup, synthetic
progesterone is known to cause some serious illnesses - blood clots
and uterine and breast cancers.
But some women today are discovering
that they don't have to take synthetic progesterone. A natural and safer
form of progesterone is readily available and is effective in relieving
the symptoms for which synthetic progesterone is prescribed. The Powerful
Effects of DHEA On Cancer DHEA is also inhibited tumor proliferation
of rat liver cells by blocking the cancer cell promoting enzyme glucose
6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH). DHEA was thus shown to inhibit cancer
cell proliferation. The human equivalent dose of 600 mg. a day suppressed
breast tumors in mice by 70%, yet even human equivalent doses of 25-120
mg showed striking cancer prevention benefits, with no evidence of toxicity.
DHEA inhibited chemically induced cancers in the colon, lung, breast,
and skin. When DHEA was applied directly to the skin, it prevented chemically
induced skin cancer. DHEA produced this effect by inhibiting the enzyme
G6PDH. DHEA inhibited cancer cell thymidine incorporation needed for
cancer cell hyperproliferation. DHEA disrupted the multiple oxidizing
effects of chemical carcinogens, not by functioning as an antioxidant,
but by modulating the effects of chemical carcinogens on cells. Super-Charging
Effects On The Immune Function DHEA declines 80-90% by age 70 or later.
DHEA demonstrated a striking ability to maintain immune system synchronization.
Oral supplementation with low doses of DHEA in aged animals restored
immunocompetence to a reasonable level within days of administration.
DHEA supplementation in aged rodents resulted in almost complete restoration
of immune function. DHEA boosted beneficial interleukin-2 and suppressed
damaging interleukin-6 levels. interleukin-6 is overproduced in the
aged, which contributes to autoimmune disease, immune dysfunction, osteoporosis,
depression, reduced healing capacity, breast cancer, B-cell lymphoma
and anemia.
Chronic DHEA administration maintained immunocompetence
in aged animals (by boosting interleukin-2 and other beneficial immune
system components and suppressing interleukin-6 and other detrimental
immune system components). Suppression of interleukin-6 with 200 mg.
a day of DHEA was shown to be effective against systemic lupus erythematosus.
Warning: Danger Signal "Are You Getting Shorter"
100 postmenopausal
women, many of who had lost height, a sign of osteoporosis. Many also
had suffered one or more fractures. Lee used bone density tests to measure
the effectiveness of natural progesterone. "It was common to see a 1O%
increase in bone density in the first 6-12 months and an annual increase
of 3-5% until stabilizing at the levels of healthy 35-year-olds. Neither
age nor time from menopause was an apparent factor. The faster increases
occurred in those with the lowest initial bone densities. The occurrence
of osteoporotic fractures dropped to zero," said Lee. Lee's results
run counter to current medical thinking about osteoporosis. "The results
of this study suggest that osteoporosis is not an irreversible condition.
Reversal has been demonstrated by the bone density tests and by clinical
results. This cannot be said of any other conventional therapy for osteoporosis."
Dr. Alan Gaby cites strong association between low DHEA levels and bone
loss in postmenopausal women.
Bodyfat Weight Loss - Beyond the Non-Sense
One of the more exciting benefits of DHEA is its ability to burn fat
and help keep it off the converting fat to muscle. It is a "thermogenic"
substance because it helps burn calories for energy rather than store
them as fat. A researcher at Temple University, Dr. A. Schwartz, has
now proven beyond doubt that DHEA is effective in weight control. DHEA
is able to block an enzyme named G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase),
an enzyme essential for fat tissue production which also promotes cancer
cell growth by blocking it. DHEA's action of reducing body fat and helping
prevent cancer may be explained. Rapid weight loss is typically the
result of a diuretic/laxative causing fluid loss, or starvation diets
causing the breakdown of primarily lean muscle tissue.
Rapid weight
loss is seldom, if ever, effective long term. Diuretics and laxatives
have little if any effect on fat loss and can be dangerous with prolonged
use. Low calorie dieting causes the body to "waste" to survive. The
body requires certain levels of glucose in the blood. Severe caloric
restriction deprives the body of an adequate supply of glucose. The
body must then break down tissue to raise the glucose level again.
Unfortunately,
this is only possible with the breakdown of lean muscle tissue and not
fat (fat cannot be converted to glucose, only to amino acids and proteins).
Starvation, therefore, results in the loss of significant amounts of
lean tissue. With the loss of lean tissue, the calorie requirement decreases,
because only lean tissue burns calories. As you eat normally again,
the body has less ability to burn the same number of calories eaten
prior to the diet. What happens to the excess calories? Yep! They're
stored as fat and the yo-yo effect is in place.
DIETS DON'T WORK!
Fat
control is key to a healthy life. DHEA appears to be the first substance
that, when laboratory tested caused the loss of fat without changing
eating habits. The calories consumed were simply converted to heat rather
than stored as fat. This is believed to be due to the inhibition of
the enzyme G6PD. Block that enzyme and you block the production of fat.
DHEA acts as a regulator of fat syntheses. DHEA also provides an additional
secondary benefit in that it aids the body's ability to produce lean
muscle tissue.

Why Wait For The Doctor To Say, "Cut Him Open"
DHEA Protects Against
Heart Disease DHEA has been shown to protect against heart disease and
atherosclerosis. A new study using coronary artery angiography showed
that low DHEA levels predispose people to more significant coronary
artery blockage. Another new study showed that DHEA inhibits abnormal
blood platelet aggregation, a factor in the development of atherosclerosis,
sudden heart attack, and stroke.
At Last...A Drugless Thermogenic That
Works
Diet, exercise and behavior modification are still the mainstay
of long-term weight control. Some researchers are studying drugs that
appear to burn fat, regardless of what is eaten or how much. It's still
early, but human studies with what scientists call thermogenic agents
are now beginning. These experimental drugs cause food energy that would
otherwise be stored as fat, to be dissipated as heat. One of the most
promising thermogenics is DHEA. The few human studies done have discovered
a fascinating effect: Not only does DHEA burn fat off, it appears to
replace it with muscle tissue. For a month doctors at the Medical College
of Virginia gave daily doses of the drug to 5 healthy men in their early
20's (none of the patients were obese, although 4 had excess body fat).
Another 5 got a placebo. Diet and lifestyle remained the same.
Result: in the DHEA group, the men's either didn't change, but body fat decreased
31% on average for 4 of 5 (the one who didn't lose fat was already very
lean). In the placebo group, there was no change. Best of all, fat seemed
to have given way to muscle. And blood levels of plaque-causing LDL,
cholesterol dropped about 7%. The investigators speculate that the drug
increases skeletal muscle, while converting stored fat to estrogen (which
could explain the cholesterol drop). DHEA's weight control effect does
not seem to be so diet dependent. No matter what you eat. DHEA still
has benefits of weight loss.
Of course, dietary modification, exercise
and lifestyle are important in weight control, but it is exciting to
obtain benefits of such a fantastic natural substance at whatever level
of commitment you make. Most of the antiobesity and antidiabetic actions
of DHEA are thought to be due to its inhibition of the enzyme G6PD.
Block that enzyme and you block fat production. In addition. DHEA has
profound antitumor activity in experimental animals, and likely in humans
as well. This, too, is thought to be due to the blockage of the G6PD
enzyme.
Yes, Stress Kills...Now You Can Kill Stress!
For 50 years physiologists
have known that putting stress on an animal causes it to age rapidly.
When a mouse is placed on an electric grid and given very mild shocks
at random intervals, its body will begin to break down a little bit
each lime. The mouse will die in just a few days. An autopsy will reveal
many signs of accelerated aging! Not because of the shocks, but the
mouse's reaction to the stress: its own body killed itself. The stress
reaction always involves the release of very powerful chemicals known
as stress hormones, called Elucocorticoid. The accumulate defect of
these stress hormones secreted by the adrenal is disastrous, even though
their short-term purpose is to protect the body from a perceived threat.
The reason is that the normal style of metabolism that builds the body,
called anabolic metabolism, is replaced, under stress by its opposite
counterpart, a catabolic metabolism, which breaks down tissues.
The
result is premature aging, muscle wasting, diabetes, fatigue, osteoporosis,
undesirable redistribution of body fat, hypertension, fluid retention,
lowered immune function, and impaired mental function. Do any sound
familiar?
The Science behind DHEA
What Do Researchers Say?
"DHEA is the mother
lode for some 18 different steroidal hormones integral to eternal youth.
Unlike hormones that excite cells into activity. DHEA 'de-excites' the
body's processes. Some of the diseases of aging are caused by the runaway
production of nucleic acids, fats and hormones. DHEA slows down their
production and thereby slows down aging." Dr. Norman Applesweig, New
York Biochemist "Everyone past age 25 should supplement their diet with
DHEA. Scientific research has linked increased levels of DHEA with reduced
risk of most degenerative diseases, delayed aging, increased energy,
and fat loss. DHEA is very safe because the body knows how and where
to use it for optimum health, and seems to basically ignore the DHEA
if it doesn't need it. There is a unique all natural precursor for DHEA
which is formulated from wild crafted yams. It has phytopharmacomimetic
properties which will help stimulate beneficial normal activity in the
body to literally trip the hands of the aging clock."

DHEA IS NOW AVAILABLE
DIRECTLY FROM ABUNDA LIFE LABORATORIES WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION
Most DHEA
products sold in health food stores are not DHEA at all, but wild yam
extracts. The Life Extension Foundation tested wild yam extracts for
six months on dozens of people and none of them experienced serum DHEA
elevations. When these same people took pharmaceutical grade DHEA capsules,
on the other hand, they all experience serum DHEA elevations. The Life
Extension Foundation first published information about DHEA in 1980,
and has been publishing regular updates ever since. The foundation has
evaluated over 2,800 published studies and interviewed many physicians
using DHEA in their practice in order to fully inform its members about
the proper use of DHEA replacement therapy. Where To obtain a DHEA Blood
Test: Any medical doctor, osteopath, dentist, podiatrist. etc., can
order a DHEA blood test for you. With a prescription for the test, you
can have your blood drawn at your doctor's office or go to a local blood
testing laboratory. When asking your doctor for a DHEA blood test prescription,
you should consider having a complete blood count and blood chemistry
profile done if you have not had one during the past year. These standard
blood tests should be done annually by people concerned about their
health. Men over age 40 should have a PSA test at the same time they
test their DHEA levels. All these blood tests can be obtained at substantial
discounts by mail.

DHEA Replacement
Therapy
Effects of replacement dose of dehydroepiandrosterone in men
and women of advancing age. Morales AJ: Nolan JJ; Nelson JC: Yen SS
Department of Reproductive Medicine, University of California School
of Medicine. La Jolla CA 92093-0802 J Clin Endocrinol Metab (UNITED
STATES) June 1994. 78 (6) p1360-7. Aging in humans is accompanied by
a progressive decline in the secretion of the adrenal androgens dehydroepiandrosterone:
(DHEA) and DHEA sulfate (1)8), paralleling that of the GH-insulin-like
growth factor (GH-ICGF-I) axis.
Although the functional relationship
of the decline of the GH-IGF-I system and catabolism is recognized.
The biological role of DHEA in human aging remains undefined. To test
the hypothesis that the decline in DHEA may contribute to the shift from anabolism to cataholism associated with aging, we studied the effect
of a replacement dose of DHEA in 13 men and 17 women. 40-70 years of
age. A randomized placebo-controlled cross-over trial of nightly oral
DHEA administration (50 mg) of 6-month duration was conducted. During
each treatment period, concentrations of androgens, lipids, apolipo
proteins. IGD-I. IGF-binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1), IGFBP-3, insulin sensitivity,
percent body fat, libido. and sense of well-being were measured. A subgroup
of men (n=8) and women (n=5) underwent 24-h sampling at 20-min intervals
for GH determinations.
DHEA and DS serum levels were restored to those,
found in young adults within 2 weeks of DHEA replacement and were sustained
through the 3 months of the study. A 2-fold increase in serum levels
of androgens (androstenedione, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone)
was observed in women, with only a small rise in androstenedione in
men. There was no change in circulating levels of sec hormone-binding
globulin, estrone, or estradiol in either gender. High density lipoprotein
levels declined slightly in women, with no other lipid changes noted
for either gender. Insulin sensitivity and percent body fat were unaltered.
Although mean 24-h GH and IGFBP-1 decreased significantly for both genders,
suggesting an increased bio-availability of IGF-I to target tissues.
This was associated with a remarkable increase in perceived physical
and psychological well-being for both men (67%) and women (84%) and
no change in libido.
In conclusion, restoring DHEA and DS to young adult
levels in men and women of advancing age induced an increase in the
bio-availability of IGF-I, as reflected by an increase in IGF-I and
a decrease in IGFBP-I levels.
These observations together with improvement
of physical and psychological well-being in both genders and the absence
of side-effects constitute the first demonstration of novel effects
of DHEA replacement in age-advanced men and women.
Cancer Prevention
with Dehydroepiandrosterone and Non-androgenic Structural Analogies
Schwartz AG; Pashko LL Fels Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular
Biology, Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA 19140.
USA J Cell Biochem Supply (UNITED STATES) 1995. 22 p210-7,
There is
increasing evidence that the adrenocortical steroid, dehydroepiandrosterone
(DHEA), is an important mammalian hormone. Administration of DHEA to
laboratory mice and rats inhibits mammalian hormone. development of
experimental tumors of the breast, lung, colon, liver, skin, and lymphatic
tissue. In the two-stage skin tumorigenesis model in mice, DHEA treatment
inhibits tumor initiation, as well as tumor promoter-induced epidermal
hyperplasia and promotion of papillomas.
There is much evidence that
DHEA produces its anti-proliferative and tumor preventive effects by
inhibiting glucose-6-phosphate dehydlogenase and the pentose phosphate
pathway. This pathway is an important source of NADPH, a critical reductant
for many biochemical reactions that generate oxygen free radicals, which
may act as second messengers in stimulating hyperplasia.
The therapeutic
use of DHEA in humans may be limited by its sex hormonal side effects.
DHEA is metabolized in vivo to both testosterone and estrone, producing
both androgenic and estrogenic effects in laboratory animals. We have
developed a synthetic steroid. 16 alpha-fluoro-5-androsterone-17-one,
which does not demonstrate the androgenic or estrogenic activity of
DHEA, yet retains the anti-proliferative and cancer preventive activity
of the native steroid (58 ReCs.).
Beware Of The Usual Negative Press
Expect the same treatment of DHEA as was received by Melatonin, Natural
Foods, Herbs, Colon Hydrotherapy, Chelation Therapy, Naturopathic Detoxification,
Organic Foods, Chiropractic Care, Naturopathic Medicine, Ozone Therapy,
Natural Vitamins, etc. The Establishment Press is allied with Establishment
Drug Medicine and the pharmaceutical monopoly. Their vested interests
are keeping you hooked on patented drug medicines. Anytime anyone other
than their own inner medical/pharmaceutical circle comes up with a life
enhancing health product it is immediately attacked by the Yellow Press,
because new health products challenge their power, prestige and position.
DHEA is an effective natural food supplement that has been proven to
be safe.
DON'T BE FOOLED BY CHEAP IMITATIONS
The market place is saturated
with Johnny-come-lately hucksters who have never taken a supplement
in their entire life. Their game in life is to follow the leader like
leeches, blood suckers and parasites. Find out what's hot, then adulterate
the products or shorten the essential processing or manufacturing steps
to come out with a cheaper product. They stick with their sleazy scam
until another hot product comes along that they can rip off with a cheap
imitation.
I've been fooled enough limes. I've learned when it comes
to health most cheaper products are far more expensive in the long run.
Most products being sold in discount mail order houses art a highly
diluted product containing some DHEA and 80 to 90% Wild Yam in its unprocessed
state. While it is true that DHEA comes from Wild Yam, it is a highly
concentrated by-product.
