Valeriana Officinalis
This herb is used to treat insomnia, stress, and tension headaches. (Despite its name, it is completely unrelated to the synthetic drug Valium.) Numerous studies have confirmed that valerian is an effective aid to sleep. It is also excellent for muscle spasms, which are often caused by stress. This herb is safe and not habit-forming, but it doesn’t work for everybody. In rare cases, it can have the opposite effect and be too stimulating. Valerian is available in extracts, capsules, and tablets. Try one capsule; if it makes you feel relaxed, then you know it works for you. Since valerian can cause sleepiness, use it only at night.
