Chlorella

FACTS

Chlorella (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) is an edible, single-celled plant that lives in fresh water.  Characterized as a “green food,” a group of food products derived from other microalgae, chlorella is packed with important phytochemicals that have unique disease-fighting properties, as well as amino acids, vitamins and minerals.  Widely used in Japan, chlorella is touted as the supplement that can help remove or “detoxify” harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and pollutants from the body.  Natural healers recommend chlorella for nonspecific complaints such as fatigue and for anyone who generally wants to feel stronger or healthier. It is also used by alternative physicians as part of an overall cancer treatment program.

Japanese researchers recently discovered that chlorella can raise blood levels of the protein albumin.  Albumin is one of the body’s most powerful antioxidants as well as its main transport system, carrying vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, hormones and other essential substances throughout the body.  Albumin is also instrumental in carrying toxins away from cells and into the liver, where they are broken down and later excreted from the body.  Without adequate levels of albumin, the kidneys, liver, and other vital organs cannot do their jobs as well, and the immune system cannot function as efficiently.  Numerous studies have documented that a low albumin level is a marker for serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.  This finding is underscored by a groundbreaking, British, heart study, published in The Lancet, in which 7,735 middle-aged men were monitored for more than nine years.  The researchers found that the men with the lowest serum albumin levels had the highest rate of death from many different causes, including heart disease.

Our levels of serum albumin steadily decline as we age – another indication that albumin may play a role in keeping our bodies healthy, strong and youthful.  Albumin levels are also lower than normal in smokers.  Not surprisingly, researchers believe that boosting albumin levels will have a salutary effect.  They point to test-tube studies confirming that raising albumin levels can both prevent cancerous changes and extend the life span of human cells.  Although no such studies have been done on humans, it makes sense that raising albumin levels would help to restore health.

Chlorella, a tiny, single-celled water-grown algae contains a nucleus and an enormous amount of readily available chlorophyll.  It also contains protein (approximately 58 percent), carbohydrates, all of the B vitamins, vitamins C and E, amino acids, and rare trace minerals.  In fact, it is virtually a complete food.  It contains more vitamin B12 than liver does, plus a considerable amount of beta-carotene.  It has a strong cell wall, however, which makes it difficult to gain access to its nutrients.  Consequently, it requires factory processing to be effective.

Chlorella is one of the few edible species of water-grown algae.  The chlorophyll in chlorella can help speed the cleansing of the bloodstream. Chlorella is very high in RNA and DNA, and has been found to protect against the effects of ultraviolet radiation.  Studies show that chlorella is an excellent source of protein, especially for people who cannot or who choose not to eat meat.

Chlorella is one of the many ‘green foods’ with exceptional healing qualities.  When properly processed as a supplement, it is easily digestible and rapidly absorbed by the body.  It comes close to being a perfect food. Chlorella is loaded with powerful disease-fighting nutrients, such as chlorophyll, nucleic acids (RNA/DNA), plus 19 amino acids (including all of the essential ones), as well as 20 vitamins and minerals.  It has been widely researched and used in Japan for numerous health related benefits, such as detoxifying the body by removing harmful pollutants and heavy metals form it.  It gives the body a better chance to use its own wisdom to maintain and heal itself, a major ingredient in most whole green super food supplements.

Principal health related actions: Excellent detoxifier that helps rid the body of harmful chemicals.  Anticancer food.  Tonic for the cardiovascular system.  Raises protein albumin levels in the blood.  Albumin is a powerful antioxidant and principal transportation system for minerals, vitamins, hormones, fatty acids and vital nutrients in the body, as well as the garbage collector of toxins.  It transports toxins to the liver, for removal from the body.  Essential for proper liver, kidney, other organs and immune system functioning. Low serum albumin levels are a predictor of high death rates due to heart disease and other organ failures in the body.

Dosage: Ideal – take 1000 mg. tablets three times a day
